Five years ago, Val embarked on travels all around the world to film a project entitled What is love? In an attempt to discover why he hadn't yet found love himself, he travelled the world for a year asking strangers what love was for them. The result? 320 unique statements. His travels inspired him to write his debut novel The Freckled Owl while staying in Sri Lanka.
I did my last recording on 7 October 2012, just before 5.00 am. Aleš suggested that I go to the centre of New York at night in order to see how the city woke up. I met a couple and it was an amazing and unforgettable experience. The guy had been unable to sleep and so went to Times Square in the middle of the night to take some photographs while she was just coming back from a nightclub:
HIM: It is about getting as much positive energy through the universe as you possibly can, because in essence we are all energy, and we feel it from each other – even subconsciously. And if you make a conscious effort to put out as much energy as possible in a positive way, other people can sense it and they’ll pick it up – so, rather than you go looking for love, love will find you.
HER: We just met tonight and I’ve got an unbelievable connection with these guy ...
ME: No, really?
HIM: Yes. (smiling)
HER: What I know about love is, you need to know yourself first, know yourself fully and full heartedly because you can’t be a we until you are a me. So, spend the time getting to know yourself, know what you like, know what you don’t like; know what works for you, know what doesn’t. And trust yourself, trust yourself! Straight up. (They hug and his hat falls onto the floor. She picks it up and puts it back on his head.)
ME: What was that you were saying about ...
HIM: Oh, you mean energy? Think about it. Energy is like a freeway and if you make a conscious effort to put out as much positive energy as you can, you become a direct line with a freeway. (She kisses him and they’re locked in embrace.) And, it’s beautiful, man. So, always stay positive, no matter what.
HER: Always.
HIM: Life is what you make it, man. If you surround yourself with negative energy, negative people and negative thoughts, everything you attract is gonna be negative. But, if you are positive, all positive things will come to you, man.
HER: You have a choice. You make a choice.
HIM: Exactly. You are your own author for your own destiny, man. Write something beautiful.
